Nga Manu Korero Regionals 2009

For Te Awakairangi this year’s Nga Manu Korero regionals saw the rise of many young talented Maori Orators. These youngsters commanded the stage, and addressed with pride, various issues relating to Maori and society. With flare and determination they all stood up to address their peers, the judges and their families.

Different schools from around the Waiarapa and Lower Region converged on Naenae College, which hosted this year’s regional competition. For hours on end students aged from 12-17 competed in four different sections, senior and Junior Maori and English. These students spoke intelligently about topics close to their hearts, the topics ranged from, 'Moko, for Maori by Maori', 'Lest We Forget', 'Water is a Treasure' and 'Diligence eclipses Intelligence.'

After lunch the senior competitors readied themselves for the impromptu section of the competition. This part of the day was the crunch time, and would ultimately allow these Kaikorero the chance to demonstrate their skills as speakers. There was humour, seriousness and the odd silence, when it came to the impromptu. Nevertheless was clear to see who had what it takes to represent the region.

Over all the competition encouraged Maori participation, and saw four top speakers, from different schools excel with excellence. Below are the four winners who will represent Te Awakairangi/ Waiarapa at the National Nga Manu Korero held in Rotorua in September this year.

Senior Maori- Turei-Hamiora Ormsby

Senior English- Nohokainga Pulekautaha-Lai

Junior Maori- Taikaha Olsen

Junior English- Ngarangi Williams
